If you’re planning to travel to the United Kingdom soon, there’s an important update you shouldn’t miss. From February 25, 2026, the UK government will begin issuing electronic visas (eVisas) to Nigerian nationals applying for UK visit visas. This means the familiar visa sticker (vignette) placed inside your passport will soon be replaced with a secure digital record.
Here’s what this change means for you.
What is Changing?
According to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), Nigerians applying for UK visit visas will no longer receive a physical visa sticker in their passports. Instead, successful applicants will receive an eVisa, which can be accessed online through a UKVI account.
The transition is part of the UK’s broader move toward a fully digital border and a modernised immigration system. However, the visa application process itself is NOT changing. You will still apply online as usual, book and attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC), submit your biometric information, and meet all existing eligibility requirements. The only difference is that your visa is issued digitally rather than in physical form.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a secure digital record of your immigration status. Instead of carrying a passport with a visa sticker, your visa details will be stored electronically in your UKVI account.
Once your application is approved, you’ll be asked to create a free UKVI account to access your visa information. This digital system lets you view your visa status anytime, share your immigration status as needed, and access your visa from anywhere in the world.
What If You Already Have a UK Visa Sticker?
If you already have a valid visa sticker (vignette) in your passport, there is no need to panic. UK authorities have clarified that your existing visa remains valid until it expires, and you do not need to switch to an eVisa immediately. The change only applies to new visit visa applications from February 25, 2026.
Benefits of the New UK eVisa System
The UK government says the switch to eVisas offers several advantages:
1. Faster Passport Return
Since visas will no longer be physically affixed to passports, applicants may receive their passports more quickly.
2. Improved Security
Digital visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with. This reduces fraud risks and increases border security.
3. Easier Access to Immigration Status
You can manage and access your visa details online at any time, without needing physical documents.

What Nigerians Should Do Now
If you plan to apply for a UK visit visa after February 25, 2026:
- Continue applying through the official UK government portal.
- Attend your biometric appointment as required.
- Once approved, create your UKVI account to access your eVisa.
- Always keep your login details secure.
It’s also advisable to regularly check official updates from the UK Government to stay informed about further changes.
The UK’s move to introduce eVisas for Nigerians marks a significant shift toward a fully digital immigration system. While the application requirements remain the same, the way visas are delivered is becoming more secure, efficient, and convenient.
For Nigerian travellers planning visits, business trips, or family reunions in the UK, this update is largely positive, provided you understand how the new system works.
If you’re applying soon, the most important step is simple: follow the official process, create your UKVI account after approval, and keep your digital records safe.
