Applications are now open for the 2027 Nordic Africa Institute’s African Scholarship Programme, a fully funded research residency for early-career researchers based in Africa.
The programme offers selected scholars the opportunity to spend 2–3 months (60–90 days) at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden, working on their ongoing research in a stimulating academic environment.
The initiative aims to strengthen research capacity in Africa and promote collaboration between African and Nordic research communities.
About the Programme
The African Scholarship Programme enables early-career researchers to:
- Develop and advance their research projects
- Access the Nordic Africa Institute’s specialised library resources
- Engage with resident researchers and visiting scholars
- Expand professional networks across Africa and the Nordic region
Hosting African scholars also strengthens knowledge exchange and deepens research partnerships between institutions.
Duration of Stay
- Minimum stay: 60 days
- Maximum stay: 90 days (approximately 3 months)
Please note:
Academic institutions in the Nordic region, including the Nordic Africa Institute, operate at reduced capacity during:
- June – August
- Mid-December – Mid-January
Applicants cannot select these periods for their visit.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

PhD Students
- Enrolled in a doctoral programme based in Africa
- Employed full-time at an African university or research centre
- Not receiving funding from an international scholarship or an external international funding source

Postdoctoral Researchers
- Within four years of completing their PhD
- Currently employed at an African university or research centre

Scholarship Benefits
The programme is fully funded and includes:
- Return economy-class airfare
- Accommodation in Uppsala
- Daily subsistence allowance of 450 SEK (approximately USD 50 per day)
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately USD 280)
- Access to a workspace, including a desk computer in a shared office
Note: The subsistence allowance is provided only for the days physically spent in Uppsala.

A detailed plan outlining:
- Research objectives during the stay
- Activities to be conducted at the Institute
- Expected outputs and outcomes

- PhD students: Signed letter from Supervisor or Head of Department confirming enrolment and employment
- Postdoctoral researchers: Signed letter from Head of Department/Institute confirming affiliation
