Applications are now open for the 2026 CIJ Climate Investigations Training Scholarship, an opportunity for experienced journalists to strengthen their investigative reporting skills and produce impactful climate-focused investigations.
The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) will select 10 journalists to participate in the Climate Investigations Course (CIC), delivered online during the spring 2026 session. The scholarship covers training valued at up to £2,638, running from 11 March to 7 May 2026.
About the Training
The programme equips journalists with advanced investigative tools and methodologies to uncover wrongdoing, analyse climate data, and tell compelling environmental stories that can influence policy, regulation, and decision-making by economic actors.
Participants will learn how to:
- Conduct deep investigative research on climate change
- Investigate climate finance and environmental wrongdoing
- Use data to quantify climate impacts accurately
- Apply open-source intelligence techniques to environmental investigations
- Craft high-impact climate and environmental stories

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be early- to mid-career journalists living and working in:
- Africa
- Latin America (South & Central America and the Caribbean)
- West Asia (including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Türkiye, UAE, and Yemen)
- South Asia (including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka)
- Be investigative journalists with experience in environmental or climate reporting, or demonstrate a strong interest in climate journalism
- Have advanced or professional working proficiency in English (reading, listening, and speaking)
- Commit to attending all modules of the Climate Investigations Course
Training Modules & Time Commitment
The scholarship requires full participation in 24.5 hours of hands-on training, delivered across four modules:
- Climate Investigation Fundamentals
- Investigating Climate Finance
- Data-Driven Climate Investigations
- ECOSINT: Environmental & Climate Open-Source Intelligence
