Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme 2026

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is inviting applications for its prestigious Scholarship Programme 2026, tailored for master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers based at Nordic universities. The programme offers scholars the rare chance to conduct research in Uppsala, Sweden, at one of Europe’s leading institutes on African studies.

The NAI Scholarship aims to build academic capacity, foster critical knowledge exchange, and enhance collaboration between researchers across Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. By supporting Africa-oriented studies in the social sciences and humanities, the initiative strengthens research networks while equipping scholars with the resources and conducive environment needed to refine their academic work.

Benefits and Funding

The scholarship provides full financial support, ensuring scholars can focus entirely on their research:

• Travel: Round-trip ticket from the scholar’s residence in a Nordic country to Uppsala, using the lowest-cost option.
• Accommodation: Free housing in a centrally located residence in Uppsala.
• Workspace: Access to a personal desk and computer in a shared office at NAI.
• Subsistence Allowance: Daily allowance of SEK 400 (approximately USD 541 monthly) to cover living expenses.
• Research Support: Free photocopying facilities, capped at 1,000 copies.

Note: The scholarship does not cover health care or other forms of insurance. Scholars must independently secure their own coverage.

Eligibility Criteria

• Be a master’s student, PhD candidate, or postdoctoral researcher.
• Be pursuing studies within the social sciences or humanities.
• Hold an affiliation with a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland.
• Be engaged in Africa-focused research or studies.
• Citizenship is not a restriction.
