The UAE has moved to tighten visa access for Nigerians, banning transit visas and imposing new financial and more stringentย requirements. Simultaneously, the country is preparing to expand its visa offerings with innovative categories aimed at professionals and tourists.
Starting this week, Nigerian passport holders can no longer apply for the 96โhour transit visa, even for connecting flights through Dubai, according to Dubai immigration notices sent to travel agents.
Also, Nigerians aged 18 to 45 travelling solo are no longer eligible for standard tourist visas; applicants in this age group must be accompanied by someone.
Travellers 45 years and older must now demonstrate financial stability by providing six months of personal Nigerian bank statements, each showing a minimum monthly USDโฏ10,000 balance.
Visa documentation, including hotel bookings and passport data pages, is still required.

Why This Matters for Nigerians
- Connective travel disrupted: Dubai serves as a major hub for Nigerians travelling onward. With transit visas suspended, plans will require new flight routes.
- Solo travel becomes costlier: Young Nigerian travellers will now need accompaniment or reject plans altogether.
- Higher financial threshold: For older applicants, a $10K monthly balance raises the bar significantly, especially amid naira volatility.
- Economic fallout: Travel agents and airlines fear further reduction in the lucrative NigeriaโDubai travel corridor, which was rebounding after 2021โ2022 pandemic tensions.
New Visas Arriving August 10, 2025
Amid these cuts, the UAE is expanding visa options to support its tech and tourism ambitions:
Visa Type | Purpose & Duration |
AI Professionals Visa | 60 or 90 days (extendable to 120/180) for AI experts working on UAE-based projects |
Event Attendee Visa | 30 or 60 days (extendable to 120/180) for cultural, business, religious, or sports events |
Commercial Gaming Activities Visa | 30 days (renewable once) for gaming professionals and investors |
Cruise/Leisure Tourist Visa | 30-day, multiple-entry stay for cruise and boat passengers (plus 30-day extension) |
These visas aim to attract global talent in AI and tech, support multimedia events, access gaming markets, and grow maritime tourism.
Balancing Acts & Broader Trends
These visa changes reflect the UAEโs dual strategy:
- Closing easy entry points (e.g., transit, tourist shortcuts), especially amid diplomatic pressures with Nigeria.
- Investing in future growth policies, such as visa pathways for skilled professionals, event attendees, and cruise tourists.
This mirrors global trends in the Gulf and Western nations, tightening immigration flows from Africa even while courting elite and sector-specific travellers.

What Nigerian Travellers Should Know
- Transit visa no longer valid โ book direct flights or secure a proper tourist visa.
- Younger travellers (18โ45) must travel with someone else to qualify.
- Older travellers (45+) need six months of bank statements with USDโฏ10K each month.
- August 10 rollout โ specialised visas open up new opportunities in AI, events, gaming, and cruise travel.
The UAE has revised its visa regulations, making it more difficult for many Nigerian travellers, particularly solo and older individuals, to gain access. However, these updates also create new opportunities for professionals and niche tourism sectors. As Dubai changes its entry criteria, Nigerians will need to adapt to these new rules or consider alternative travel routes and destinations.
