The European Parliament has opened applications for the 2026 Sakharov Fellowships for Human Rights Defenders, a fully funded programme designed to strengthen the work of human rights advocates from non-EU countries.
The fellowship selects up to 14 human rights defenders each year to participate in a two-week intensive programme in Brussels, Belgium, and an additional location within an EU Member State. Since its launch in 2016, the initiative has supported activists by equipping them with practical tools, global networks, and deeper knowledge of European Union human rights mechanisms.
Participants gain first-hand exposure to the work of the European Parliament and EU institutions through meetings with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), EU officials, and Brussels-based human rights organisations. The programme also features expert-led workshops focused on advocacy, communication, security and safety, countering disinformation, resilience and well-being, and documenting human rights violations.
In addition to structured learning, fellows have time dedicated to individual advocacy, networking, and communication activities, enabling them to strengthen their ongoing human rights work at home and internationally.
