Applications are now open for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management (MESPOM) for the 2026–2028 academic cycle. This prestigious two-year programme, coordinated by the Central European University (CEU) in Vienna, brings together a global community of scholars committed to solving the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The MESPOM Consortium comprises four leading institutions — Central European University (Austria), Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), and the University of the Aegean (Greece). Together, they deliver a unique, interdisciplinary learning experience designed to prepare the next generation of environmental leaders.
About the Programme
Since its establishment in 2005, MESPOM has trained more than 500 students from over 70 countries. The programme combines environmental science, management, and policy to equip graduates with the analytical, research, and leadership skills needed to address global sustainability challenges.
Students explore environmental issues through multiple lenses — scientific, social, and economic — and develop the capacity to design innovative, evidence-based solutions. The programme’s emphasis on applied learning ensures that participants gain practical exposure through internships, collaborative research, and partnerships with businesses, governments, and non-profit organisations.
Academic Structure
MESPOM is a two-year, 120 ECTS master’s programme structured around a series of immersive learning experiences across Europe.
- Year 1:
Students begin at Central European University (Vienna) for the fall and winter terms, focusing on sustainability, environmental governance, and research methods.
In the spring, they move to the University of the Aegean (Greece), where courses explore land, water, and ecosystem management, alongside sustainable tourism and conservation. The summer term is dedicated to internships that provide real-world experience with partner institutions and environmental organisations. - Year 2:
Participants select a specialisation — either at Lund University (Sweden) with a focus on Environment, Industry, and Products, or at the University of Manchester (UK), where the emphasis is on Environment and Pollution Control.
The programme concludes with an individual Master’s thesis, which can be undertaken at any of the partner universities, aligning with each student’s academic and career goals.
Throughout their studies, students engage deeply with critical themes such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, sustainable energy, urban resilience, circular economy, and environmental justice.
