The Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University is now accepting applications for its 2026–2027 Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
This fellowship offers early-career scholars the opportunity to pursue original research, design and teach undergraduate courses, and participate in the intellectually rigorous Pembroke Seminar. Fellows will also benefit from collaboration with faculty members, engagement in interdisciplinary scholarship, and professional development opportunities.
About the Programme
For the 2026–2027 academic year, the Pembroke Center will appoint Postdoctoral Research Associates whose work connects to the theme of the Pembroke Seminar, “The Meanings of Merit: Labor, Categories of Difference, and the Creation of Knowledge.” The seminar will be directed by Paja Faudree, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at Brown University.
Salary and Benefits
The fellowship offers an annual salary ranging from $62,232 to $67,824, depending on the number of years of postdoctoral experience. Additional benefits include:
- $2,000 research allowance
- A one-time $1,000 relocation stipend to help transition to Providence

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Selection is based on scholarly potential and relevance to the seminar theme.
- Applicants must hold a PhD by the start of the fellowship but must not be in a tenured position.
- Candidates must have received their PhD from an institution other than Brown University within the last five years.
- The appointment runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
Application
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Curriculum vitae
- Cover letter: Explain how your research relates to the seminar theme and provide a proposed course description.
- Writing sample: Up to 7,000 words (28 double-spaced pages, 12-point font, 1” margins). If it is part of a larger work, include a brief cover page explaining its context.
Shortlisted candidates will later be required to submit:
- A one-page document with the project title and a 250-word abstract
- A detailed five-page project statement (double-spaced)
- A short bibliography relevant to the project
- Three confidential letters of recommendation
- A full syllabus with description and reading schedule for an advanced undergraduate Gender and Sexuality Studies seminar
