The DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Master’s Scholarships Programme 2026 is now open for applications, offering fully funded Master’s degree scholarships in Germany for future leaders from developing countries.
Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, this prestigious programme supports international students, especially from countries like Nigeria, to pursue Master’s studies in disciplines relevant to social, political, and economic development.
What the Helmut-Schmidt Scholarships Programme Offers
The Helmut-Schmidt Programme aims to prepare talented individuals for leadership roles in their home countries. It does this by offering:
- Full scholarships for selected Master’s programmes in Public Policy, Law, Social Sciences, Economics, and Administration.
- Preparation for leadership roles in public administration, development agencies, NGOs, and international organisations.

Scholarship Benefits
If selected, you’ll receive:
- Monthly stipend of €992
- Full health insurance in Germany
- Travel allowance to and from Germany
- Study and research grant
- Pre-study German language course (up to 4 months, compulsory)
- Rent and family allowances, if applicable
Note: For the “Social Protection” course, the fourth semester (online) receives a reduced stipend of €500/month.
Who Can Apply for the Helmut-Schmidt Master’s Scholarships Programme?
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (Social Sciences, Law, Economics, Public Policy, etc.) with above-average grades (upper third).
- Have relevant professional experience (internships, jobs, volunteering, or community service).
- Be committed to contributing to the development of your home country.
- Have graduated no earlier than January 1, 2019.
- Have not spent more than 15 months outside your DAC-listed country before applying.
Applicants with a previous Master’s degree must justify the need for a second postgraduate degree.
Language Requirements
All Master’s programmes are taught in English. Applicants must provide valid proof of English proficiency, as specified by the individual course requirements.
Application Process
You may apply for up to two Master’s courses from the list of participating universities. Here’s what to do:
- Download and complete the DAAD Application Form.
- Write a single motivation letter (max. 2 pages), stating your reasons for applying and ranking your two course choices.
- Submit your application directly to the universities offering the Master’s courses, not to DAAD.
Application Period: 1 June – 31 July 2025

Required Documents
- Signed checklist from DAAD
- Completed the DAAD application form
- One motivation letter (for both courses)
- Detailed CV (Europass format preferred)
- Degree certificates & transcripts (with translations, if not in English or German)
- Evidence of work experience or volunteering
- Proof of English language proficiency
- One academic or professional reference
- APS Certificate (for Chinese applicants only)
⚠️ Important: Incomplete or improperly submitted applications will be disqualified. Do not submit applications to the DAAD. Only apply through the participating universities.
Final Selection and Notification
Applications are reviewed by a committee of university professors and DAAD representatives in October–November 2025. Final decisions will be communicated by January 2026. If shortlisted, you’ll be asked to upload your full application on the DAAD portal.
